The Batman : A New Angle on Bruce Wayne

The long awaited 2021's The Batman trailer was finally released at the DC Fandome Event and fans around the world cheered for it. There are also some voices questioning concerns as to the slight differences of this Batman's interpretation compared to the previous Batmen that we had.

Robert Pattinson is our new Batman, and when he was announced to be the new Bruce Wayne, not everyone exactly was happy with this news. Probably because he is mostly known for his Twilight role, a franchise that is not known for being highly rated or praised for its acting, rather the opposite so of course, people would not associate the lead actor from this cringy vampire franchise to be the next face of the most popular superhero.

However, having watched several of Robert's recent works, I did not share the same concerns. If anything, his acting from Good Time (2017), High Life (2018) and The Lighthouse (2019) not only assures me that he is going to do fine, but to be fair his performance is to be anticipated because he can really act. I think the reason why Robert choosed to act in indie films for recent years rather than big blockbusters is in order for him to proof that he is a good actor and to remove the Twilight image from him.

Another reason to be excited for this new iteration is that somehow, Matt Reeves is able to find even another angle to look at Bruce Wayne's journey into The Dark Knight, even after previous versions that we got in several films and TV series. If 1989's Micheal Keaton was comical with Tim Burton's gothic aspect on the top; 2005's Christian Bale was the iteration of a epic family movie Batman, and 2016's Ben Affleck was the brutal and aged fallen Batman, the new Batman is an alternate-universe, Elseworld Batman in which he is still young and full of vengeance, and the film seems to be set in a neo-noir puzzle-mystery vibes ala Zodiac. This is fitting, since the villain in the film would be The Riddler, plus Penguin as the side villain.

The fact that this film would be tackled with a neo-noir thriller angle is really interesting, as people seems to forget that The Batman is also known as The World's Best Detective and the past films didn't really highlight this aspect. This film also, besides being inspired by Taxi Driver and The French Connection for its neo-noir aspect, is also seems to be taken inspiration from Batman: Year One comics, as well as some design aspects that seems to be inspired from the Arkham video game franchise. Not to mention that the fighting scene (based on the teaser trailer) seems to be akin to Marvel Netflix's Daredevil (which is really great). This is definitely an interesting blend.

So, here is me hoping that the film would not be delayed from its initial date now set in October 2021.
